NFL defense rankings: Worst NFL defenses entering 2024

32. Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers have the worst NFL defense in 2024. Trading away edge rusher Brian Burns wiped away the one highly effective outside pass rusher Carolina had and we don’t have much confidence in Jadeveon Clowney and D.J. Wonnum can get the job done. If you can get after the passer, every other part of the unit will struggle. For as much as we love Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and defensive tackle Derrick Brown, there just isn’t much else to believe in here.

31. Washington Commanders (Previously: 28)

It’s going to take multiple seasons before any real signs of improvement are shown by the Washington Commanders defense. There are well-known players at linebacker, but Bobby Wagner is going to be torched by teams in coverage. Speaking of coverage issues, Washington’s cornerback room is a concern and there’s no real impact talent at edge rusher. It’s a recipe for an ugly first season of Dan Quinn’s defense.

30. Arizona Cardinals (Previously: 26)

Losing BJ Ojulari early into training camp serves as a major blow for the Arizona Cardinals defense. It takes a bad pass-rushing unit and makes it an even bigger concern, which will only make things worse for this Cardinals’ secondary. We do like Jonathan Gannon’s influence and believe he can get the most out of the players on the Cardinals roster, but there just isn’t much to work with defensively in Arizona right now.

29. Los Angeles Chargers (Previously: 28)

Hiring defensive coordinator Jesse Minter was a brilliant first move by head coach Jim Harbaugh. We also liked the selection of linebacker Junior Colson in the 2024 NFL draft, as it gives the Los Angeles Chargers an off-ball linebacker who knows Minter’s system. However, the Chargers front seven is still not a top 15 unit and its secondary is probably worse than that. Paired with the transition of learning Minter’s system, it will likely be a rough year for the Chargers defense. Fortunately, the future is bright.

28. Los Angeles Rams (Previously: 18)

We already held concerns regarding the Los Angeles Rams defense entering the season, prompting the drop from 18th to 27th. Now, a unit that had huge questions about its inexperience in the front seven, traded away arguably one of the best off-ball linebackers (Ernest Jones) outside of San Francisco ahead of Week 1. Off-ball linebacker is one of the shallowest talent pools in the NFL right now and the depth was a question in Los Angeles when they had Jones. With the captain of this unit gone, the Rams will likely finish with one of the worst NFL defenses this season.

27. Cincinnati Bengals (Previously: 26)

There’s hope for a young Cincinnati Bengals secondary. Dax Hill is making a strong impression at cornerback and working with Cam Taylor-Britt and DJ Turner II, there’s more reason for confidence in improvement from this group. Geno Stone will provide Cincinnati with playmaking, a nice complement to safeties Vonn Bell and Jordan Battle. Up front, however, the Bengals defensive line is aging quickly with regression clearly catching up to the starters. Unless Myles Murphy and Kris Jenkins step up in expected ways, this will likely be one of the worst defenses in the AFC this season.

26. Denver Broncos (Previously: 30)

The Denver Broncos arguably have the best cornerback in the NFL (Patrick Surtain II). While there aren’t any big names on the defensive line, Zach Allen and John Franklin-Myers can at least be a productive edge duo with Nik Nonitto providing some added juice. Denver is going to need its defense to carry them to some wins this season. While we don’t see that happening often, we do believe the Broncos defense can have some of the positive stretches it experienced in 2023.

25. New York Giants

The 2024 NFL Draft addressed the New York Giants biggest defensive needs, adding Tyler Nuvin and Andru Phillips to the secondary. Nubin isn’t a great athlete, but he has a nose for the football and Phillips is one of the rookies who can challenge for significant snaps quickly. If the Giants’ secondary is even just below average, a pass rush featuring Kayvon Thibodeaux, Brian Burns and Dexter Lawrence can make it look much better. There are always some reservations about a new defensive play-caller, but we do see plenty of upside for the Giants defense in 2024.

24. Atlanta Falcons (Previously: 31)

Trading for Matthew Judon and signing Justin Simmons will make a world of difference for the Atlanta Falcons defense. Originally, Atlanta sat at the bottom of our NFL defense rankings because they lacked any bonafide pass-rushing threat. Judon provides plenty of that and one great pass rusher can make everyone around him look better. Pairing Simmons is the perfect complement to Jessie Bates and it will make this unit even better against the pass. We still don’t like the lack of depth or second-tier starters in Atlanta, but the two additions will make a huge impact compared to how things could’ve been.

23. Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts basically ignored what everyone believed was a need at cornerback until Round 6 of the 2024 NFL Draft. Combine that with striking out on the L’Jarius Sneed trade and it’s clear general manager Chris Ballard has a ton of confidence in improvements from a young secondary. We’re not nearly as confident, but Indianapolis did bolster its pass rush with Laiatu Latu. A front four that can consistently get into the backfield makes a secondary look better, so we’ll give the Colts some benefit of the doubt in that regard. However, we still have big questions about the back end heading into the summer.

22. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense certainly benefitted from facing three NFC South offenses six total times in 2023. However, a seven-game stretch in the second half of the season saw the Buccaneers surrender a 93.4 QB rating and a 10-5 TD-INT ratio. The important thing this offseason was retaining Lavonte David and Antoine Winfield Jr. but cornerback and edge rusher are glaring issues that prevent this as of now from being a top-20 defense. We’re not convinced Chris Braswell changes much and that gives us no reason to expect Tampa Bay to consistently maintain a quality defense this fall.

21. Seattle Seahawks

Look back at the transition periods the Michigan Wolverines and Baltimore Ravens had with Mike Macdonald. It takes half a season for the first learning curve and then the huge step forward comes in the second year. Fortunately for the Seattle Seahawks, they do have some outstanding young talent (Devon Witherspoon, Riq Woolen and Byron Murphy) to make a huge impact. Plus, Seattle’s interior defensive line is arguably one of the strongest of its peers in the NFC. The learning curve and some questions at edge rusher outside of Uchenna Nwosu are the drawbacks for Seattle, but this could be a top-20 defense in 2024.

20. Philadelphia Eagles

We’ll hold off on giving the Philadelphia Eagles too big of a jump in our NFL defense rankings following their strong draft haul, but they did move from 27th to 21st. Quinyon Mitchell has the potential to become a No. 1 corner, especially under the tutelage of Darius Slay and the Eagles’ coaching staff. Cooper DeJean, wherever you see him playing, is a perfect fit for Vic Fangio. Plus, Philadelphia even bolstered its defensive front with edge rusher Jakyx Hunt and linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. There’s a chance the Eagles can field one of the 10 best NFL defenses in 2024, but that spot needs to be earned on the field this fall.

19. Miami Dolphins

It’s all about health with the Miami Dolphins defense. If Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb are both out there and effective, this could be one of the 12 best NFL defenses in 2024. While it’s promising that Phillips is off the PUP list, there’s still a long road ahead. Plus, a new defensive coordinator requires an acclimation period. On the bright side, this should be the lowest Miami lands in our NFL defense rankings this year.

Related: Why the Miami Dolphins have hit their ceiling with Tua Tagovailoa

18. New Orleans Saints

We have more reservations about the New Orleans Saints defense than others. For one thing, New Orleans is banking on Chase Young staying healthy and DeMario Davis (35 years old), Tyrann Mathie (32 years old) and Cameron Jordan (35 years old) to keep fighting off age regression. There’s some intriguing depth and youth on the Saints’ defensive line, but we’re also cognizant of a unit that allowed 112.3 rushing ypg and 4.3 ypc in its final six contests last season. Plus, New Orleans has taken advantage of a weak division for years. Both the Falcons and Panthers’ offenses should be much better, which could drop the Saints’ defensive stats.

17. Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills were in consideration for a bump in our defensive rankings heading into the regular season. Unfortunately, injury struck Matt Milano again. Losing the All-Pro linebacker is devastating, especially for a team that lost some depth and veteran leadership this offseason. With that said, Sean McDermott also coached this unit up to perform like a top-10 defense late last season with Milano on IR. It’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility that he does it again, so the Bills defense sticks in the 15th spot.

16. Las Vegas Raiders

How good the Las Vegas Raiders defense will be in 2024 might come down to cornerback Jack Jones. After being scooped up off waivers from the New England Patriots, Jones held opponents to a 63.0 QB rating with a 56.3 percent completion rate when he wore a Raiders uniform. If he replicates that, Las Vegas has a No. 1 cornerback and that will go a long way.

Just one difference-maker in coverage who can line up against top receivers will make life even easier for the quarter of Maxx Crosby, Christian Wilkins, Malcolm Koonce and Tyree Wilson. We’ll also put out the reminder that this same Raiders defense held opponents to an 84.0 QB rating with 39 sacks and a 13-12 TD-INT line in its final 13 games last year.

15. Tennessee Titans (Previously: 18)

It’s certainly surprising to see the Tennessee Titans be this aggressive in improving their defense in a single offseason, considering they were previously viewed as more of a retooling team. However, new defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson now has a top No. 1 cornerback in L’Jarius Sneed to pair with a very solid starter opposite him in Chidobe Awuzie, with Roger McCreary holding down the slot. Suddenly, a Titans’ secondary that has been a weakness in the last three years becomes a strength. If the Titans’ pass rush led by Jeffery Simmons, Arden Key and Harold Landry III can up their game in 2024, Tennessee could finish with a top-15 defense in football.

Related: Worst NFL rosters

It just keeps getting better for the Titans defense. One of the few weaknesses remaining heading into the season was off-ball linebacker. All Tennessee did before Week 1 is flip Day 3 picks two years from now for Ernest Jones, who immediately becomes one of the best off-ball linebackers in the AFC. The Titans might now have one of the most underrated NFL defenses this season.

14. Minnesota Vikings (Previously: 17)

The one thing Brian Flores lacked with the Minnesota Vikings defense last season was a cornerback he could rely on. One way to highlight the Vikings’ woes is that the team finished with the worst DVOA (16.9 percent) in man coverage last season. While Stefon Gilmore is now 33 years old, he still held opponents to a 55.8 percent completion rate and 82.7 QB rating (Pro Football Reference) last season.

Related: Minnesota Vikings sign Stephon Gilmore

Even having one steady presence in the secondary who can line up against No. 1 receivers is a huge difference-maker for Flores. The Vikings defensive coordinator can be a lot more aggressive with his pass rushers and we know there’s a lot of talent to work with in the front seven. If Minnesota improves its biggest weakness from last season – 101.2 QB rating and 72.2% completion rate allowed from Weeks 11-18 – this can be in the upper echelon of our NFL defense rankings throughout the 2024 season.

13. Green Bay Packers

This isn’t just a bet on the talent on the Green Bay Packers roster. There’s certainly risk with Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, we have no way of knowing how his stuff from college will translate to the NFL in his first year on the job. Fortunately, he has an All-Pro talent at cornerback (Jaire Alexander), impact players at edge rusher (Rashan Garry, Kenny Clark and Preston Smith) along with a high-upside off-ball linebacker in Quay Walker. Most importantly, Green Bay now has the do-it-all safety in Xavier McKinney that this Packers defense has lacked since Nick Collins. McKinney is the skeleton key to Hafley’s defense and he rounds out a talented roster that could culminate in one of the 10 best NFL defenses in 2024.

Related: One bold prediction for all 32 NFL teams

12. Jacksonville Jaguars

Our confidence in the Jacksonville Jaguars defense stems from what the team did this offseason. In Atlanta, defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen transformed one of the worst NFL defenses in his first year on the job. He’ll have a lot more talent in the cupboard with the Jaguars. Jacksonville strengthened its defensive line with Arik Armstead, who is going to make life easier for Josh Allen. Plus, Nielsen’s work with defensive linemen bodes well for Travon Walker at least being a steady contributor. This might be a bit more of a bend but don’t break defense, but the Jaguars shouldn’t be handicapped by their defense whatsoever in 2024.

Related: Best NFL Draft classes ever

11. Detroit Lions

Our issues with the Detroit Lions defense last season came at cornerback and on the defensive line. Aidan Hutchinson and Alim McNeil are forces to be reckoned with, but that two-man tandem can only do so much. DJ Reader will be a consistent presence alongside McNeil on the interior and Marcus Davenport at least provides some juice. Far more importantly, Detroit reworked its cornerback room with the additions of Terrion Arnold, Carlton Davis and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. The Lions’ secondary was its weakness in 2023, we’re betting it will be a strength this fall.

10. Chicago Bears

2024 NFL defense rankings: Evaluating all 32 defenses before training camp (4)

Matt Eberflus kept his job this offseason in large part because of what the Chicago Bears defense did in the second half of the season. From Weeks 10-18, Chicago’s opponents average just a 70.5 QB rating with an 11-16 TD-INT ratio and 6.5 yards per attempt. The Bears defense also held opponents to 93.9 rushing yards per game with 4 scores in an eight-game stretch. Chicago’s pass rush remains a bit of a concern, in comparison to the best NFL defenses in 2024, but the scheme and talent at linebacker and in the defensive backfield stand out.

9. New England Patriots

2024 NFL defense rankings: Evaluating all 32 defenses before training camp (5)

Trading away Matthew Judon is certainly a blow for the New England Patriots defense, even if it’s the right thing for the franchise long-term. With that said, New England played well defensively last season without Judon. From Weeks 10-18 in 2023, the Patriots defense held opponents to 181.1 passing yards per game with an average 80.7 QB rating. Running against New England – 84.6 rush ypg and 3.1 yards per carry – didn’t go any better for opponents.

While the change from Bill Belichick to Jerody Mayo will likely have a negative influence on how New England’s defense fares against elite quarterbacks, this should still be one of the 10 best NFL defenses in 2024. The biggest reason for that, beyond the depth of talent at every level, is a healthy Christian Gonzalez. In just his second season, we’re confident he can be deserving of a Pro Bowl selection in 2024.

Related: New England Patriots mock draft 2024

8. Pittsburgh Steelers

2024 NFL defense rankings: Evaluating all 32 defenses before training camp (6)

When Alex Highsmith, T.J. Watt and Cam Heyward are on the field together, the Pittsburgh Steelers pass rush is a daunting challenge for any opponent. To make matters worse for offensive linemen, rookie Keeanue Benton blossomed as an interior pass rusher in 2023. Now, Pittsburgh has upgraded at linebacker with Patrick Queen and even if he doesn’t play at an All-Pro level, he’s a monumental upgrade over what came before him.

Related: NFL stadium rankings

At cornerback, we’re confident that Joey Porter Jr. is ready to be that No. 1 guy for Pittsburgh. We aren’t quite as confident in Donte Jackson opposite of him on the boundary, but the Steelers have also fielded much worse cornerbacks before him. Durability is a concern with this group, but the Steelers should certainly have one of the 10 best NFL defenses in 2024.

7. Houston Texans

2024 NFL defense rankings: Evaluating all 32 defenses before training camp (7)

We’re buying all the stock in the 2024 version of the Houston Texans defense. In their first year in DeMeco Ryans’ system, Houston held opponents to just 90.1 rushing yards per game with a 3.3 yards per carry average and a 30.8 percent third-down success rate after Week 5. Now, edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. enters his second season, he’ll now be supported on the opposite side by Danielle Hunter with Denico Autry inside.

Related: NFL QB rankings 2024

Houston also addressed its glaring hole at linebacker with Azeez Al-Shaair, who knows Ryans’ system and thrives as a run defender. Plus, the secondary added more depth with Jeff Okudah (free agent) and Kamari Lassiter (NFL Draft). The Texans can have one of the best defenses in the NFL next season.

6. San Francisco 49ers

2024 NFL defense rankings: Evaluating all 32 defenses before training camp (8)

The San Francisco 49ers defense had some real problems stopping the run last season. In the NFL playoffs, opponents averaged 5.1 yards per carry and 149.3 rushing yards per game against San Francisco. It was right in line with the numbers (126.8 rush ypg, 4.8 ypc allowed) in the team’s final four regular-season games.

Related: Highest-paid NFL coaches

Fortunately for San Francisco, its pass rush should be more consistent in 2024 after becoming a big problem this past year. Nick Bosa is now supported by Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos. The big question, beyond the 49ers run defense, is how long does San Francisco have to play without linebacker Dre Greenlaw.

Top 5 NFL defenses

5. Baltimore Ravens

2024 NFL defense rankings: Evaluating all 32 defenses before training camp (9)

The Baltimore Ravens spent the majority of the 2023 season atop our NFL defense rankings. However, offseason losses leave some big questions. While Ravens defensive coordinator Zach Orr has generated some buzz, he’s only 32 years old and it’s a longshot he’s as sharp of a defensive mind as Mike Macdonald.

Related: Baltimore Ravens coach reveals massive workload Derrick Henry may have in 2024

Baltimore lost assistant coaches this summer and it lost significant depth and talent. Patrick Queen left for the Steelers, Jadeveon Clowney landed in Carolina and defensive backs Geno Stone, Rock Ya-Sin and Ronald Darby also left. We know the Ravens excel at player development and they’ll likely have a top-10 defense this fall, but the losses and the absence of a top-flight pass rusher are concerns.

4. Dallas Cowboys

2024 NFL defense rankings: Evaluating all 32 defenses before training camp (10)

Dan Quinn was a very good defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, turning around an awful unit that was coordinated by Mike Nolan. However, we also saw plenty of instances where the Cowboys defense would be exposed by great opponents, often in the same areas that Quinn never found a way to stop.

Mike Zimmer is arguably an even better defensive coordinator and he brings more to the table strategically. Plus, Dallas is getting back cornerback Trevon Diggs after he suffered an ACL tear in 2023. What holds Dallas back in our NFL defense rankings is an inability to stop the run and the glaring hole at off-ball linebacker. The sacks and takeaways will make this one of the best NFL defenses in 2024, but issues defending the run and routinely being attacked over the middle of the field will be two issues on display quite frequently.

3. Kansas City Chiefs

2024 NFL defense rankings: Evaluating all 32 defenses before training camp (11)

On the one hand, we have real concerns about how the Kansas City Chiefs secondary will perform without L’Jarius Sneed. He wasn’t perfect in coverage and he drew plenty of penalties, but Sneed often delivered when lined up against No. 1 receivers. For as great as Trent McDuffie is, his best role is in the slot.

Related: Top NFL free agents right now, potential landing spots

With that said, we’ve seen Kansas City overcome the loss of cornerback Charvarius Ward and quickly find his replacement. The Chiefs coaching staff likes what it has in Joshua Williams and Jaylen Watson, too. Plus, Steve Spagnuolo is one of the best defensive minds in the NFL and his unit will keep wreaking havoc with Chris Jones and George Karlaftis each a strong bet for double-digit sacks. If Felix Anudike-Uzomah makes a second-year leap and a quality perimeter corner emerges in Kansas City, this could be the No. 1 defense in football.

2. Cleveland Browns

2024 NFL defense rankings: Evaluating all 32 defenses before training camp (12)

The Cleveland Browns brought the band back together. Cleveland had the best NFL defense in 2023 for a few months, holding opponents to a 55.6 percent completion rate and 73.2 QB rating with 34 sacks and a 10-9 TD-INT rate in the first 12 weeks. Then, Myles Garrett suffered a shoulder injury and a banged-up Browns’ defense allowed a 13-9 TD-INT rate with just 15 sacks in its final 16 games.

Related: Cleveland Browns news, rumors

A healthy version of this unit can deliver one of the best NFL defenses in 2024, especially with more familiarity with Jim Schwartz’s scheme. Garrett will prove why he’s a perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate and another year in Schwartz’s system should result in more team-wide improvements.

1. New York Jets

2024 NFL defense rankings: Evaluating all 32 defenses before training camp (13)

The New York Jets should have the best NFL defense in 2024. Losing Bryce Huff is a blow for this pass rush, but Jermaine Johnson showed great improvement last season and the cornerback tandem of Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed means generating pressures is easier for the defensive front. A defense that allowed the second-fewest yards per play (4.6) last season should be even better next fall with a healthy Aaron Rodgers keeping the Jets’ offense on the field far more frequently. As if all of that talent wasn’t enough, New York replaced Bryce Huff with Hasson Reddick and he is going to eat on this Jets defense with all the talent around him. Now, if Reddick is sitting out games, then the Jets defense has a bit of a pass-rushing problem.
